ALEXI LUBOMIRSKI FOR VARIETY

Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt recently reunited for a taped one-on-one interview for Variety, and their talk was full of reminiscences about their time on set, from the connection they formed to Meryl Streep's amazing ability to improvise a classic phrase.

They began their interview by recalling—or, in Blunt's case, attempting to recall—how they originally met.

"Did we meet before the table read?" Hathaway inquired of the Oppenheimer star.

"This is so embarrassing because I remember every second of the first time I met you," Hathaway immediately responded. I'm far more interested in you than you are in me. It's all right. It's all right."

The Eileen actress continued by describing her first impression of her co-star. '"I was hearing your name, and they said, 'It's this amazing girl from England, and she's so funny.'" And I recall stepping into the room, turning, and bumping into you. "In my head, I was like, 'What a movie star!'" she said.

"You were spitting out stardust." Then we went to get some coffee. I took you for a walk around my neighborhood."

Similarly, Blunt praised Hathaway's first impression of her. "I was very inexperienced going into that circumstance. "And you were like the warmest hug," she continued. "Even though you were a huge movie star at the time, you treated me as an equal." You're one of the folks I've known for the longest time. We've been friends for 18 years."

The film starred Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a potential journalist who becomes the assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of the fictional magazine Runway. Emily Charlton, Miranda's domineering first-in-command assistant, was played by Blunt.

Blunt remarked on the impact of The Devil Wears Prada on her career. "We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie," she went on to say. "I'm not sure any of us expected it to become what it did." Every week, it is quoted to me. It will be remembered as the film that altered my life."

They also discussed some of their favorite lines from the 2006 picture, many of which were supposedly improvised by Streep.

"I recall Meryl coming up with 18 different phrases on the spot. "Stanley Tucci and you were doing the same thing," Hathaway recalls. "I was just like this kindergartner who was like, 'How are they all so good?'"

"I would laugh all the time because I was so horrible to you most of the time in this movie," Blunt remarked of her character's animosity against Hathaway's character. And it was your small face—this lovely, slightly perplexed face."

"A deer in headlights," confirmed Hathaway. "You know, I think [Meryl] has always wanted to join us in our fun. She stayed so in character."

"Do you know she's never done Method acting since?" Blunt questioned. "Do you?" "She said she was so unhappy on this one because we were all having a party on the other side of the set." And she said, "'I won't do this again.'"
