Richard Dickson has been named president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Gap Inc., a well-known specialty apparel company with headquarters in the US, with effect from August 22, 2023. Bobby Martin will continue to serve as the board's chair and oversee a seamless transition.
Dickson is leaving his most recent position as president and COO of Mattel to join Gap. Dickson was an integral part in Mattel's global corporate change, leading to the revitalization of the company's brands. According to a news announcement from Gap, Dickson joined the board of directors in November 2022.
"Richard has invaluable expertise in areas critical to the work Gap Inc is doing to strengthen the company for the long term. And we are thrilled to have his visionary leadership as the company redefines the future potential of Gap and its renowned American fashion brands," said lead independent director, Mayo A Shattuck III.
"Gap is a portfolio of iconic brands known for boldly defining American style and making quality fashion accessible to millions." But it's the job ahead that most excite me—the opportunity to collaborate with the teams to reinvent Gap Inc for a new era. "Under Bobby's leadership, the team has begun to truly reset the company for long-term success, laying a new foundation on which I'm excited to build," Dickson said.
"Gap has a rich history, with brands that have significant meaning in people's lives." During a thorough search, it became evident that Richard is the right person for the job at this time. "His experience as a proven transformational brand builder, combined with his belief in the power of inclusivity, make him an ideal fit for Gap," Martin added.
