Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One was a long time coming for the career of Hayley Atwell.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming installment of Tom Cruise's blockbuster movie, Atwell said how her role as master thief Grace is one she has been waiting for for 17 years as an actor. Despite her first breakthrough performance as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which began with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, the new Mission: Impossible sequel places Atwell in the heart of the action rather than as a sidekick to the franchise's protagonist. "I was finally given the trust and the platform... to show more range and emotional depth in a franchise or something of this size, which I hadn't been afforded before," said Atwell.
"And so I have this eternal gratitude to Tom and to McQ, who provided the resources and the support system on set every day so that I could thrive," she concluded. It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. After 17 years in this field, I've finally been able to achieve something at this level, with this degree of filmmaking quality, which I'd never had before."
As Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One lays the groundwork for Atwell's future in the sequel, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two, MCU fans are wondering if the actor will reprise his role as Agent Carter in the future. Atwell expressed dissatisfaction with her cameo as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But her feelings for Agent Carter haven't altered, and she's willing to return if Marvel Studios calls.
The first installment of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning is now in theaters.
